Lung Cancer
Lung Cancer is considered to be the most dangerous cancer types. The uncontrollable growth of the cells is observed in the lungs. As the lungs pump oxygen into the body, the cancer virus cells spread much faster into the other parts of the body. Lung cancer is divided into two types, small cell lung carcinoma and non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). The treatment varies for each type of these lung cancers. Generally for the treatment of NSCLC is by surgery and for the small-cell lung carcinoma chemotherapy and radiation is used. The most common cause of lung cancer is nicotine. Due to extensive exposure to tobacco smoking, passive smoking can also cause lung cancer. The procedure to diagnose Lung cancer is by using radiograph of the chest. This is the very first step that is taken if a patient has observed any kind of symptoms of lung cancer. History of Lung cancer: Lung cancer was known to many before the invention of cigarette. It was a rare disease till 1761. It was only in the 18th century that research on lung cancer was started. The rise of lung cancer cases was only in the early 1900. There was a rise of 10-15% of lung tumour cases later in 1900s. Fritz Lickint from Germany was the first to see the relation between smoking and lung in 1929, with this discovery aggressive anti-smoking campaigns were started all across the globe. The British Doctor Study gave the first solid evidence of the relation between smoking and lung cancer. This led to a strong belief in physicians that smoking should be avoided to prevent lung cancer. It was only in the 1970s that chemotherapy was successfully as a treatment for lung cancer. Today cigarette packs come with a cautionary warning stating- “Smoking causes Cancer”. Lung Cancer is considered to be the most dangerous cancer types.
