Lets first differentiate between laptop overheat and laptop getting warmed. While laptop getting warmed is usual, overheated laptop has some clear signals to show. One such sign could be of a laptop getting shut down for no reason.

Reasons - Why a laptop Overheats
1. Clogged vent - Foremost reason why a laptop would over heat. The cooling mechanism of a laptop works in a synchronized manner. But over the period of time, dust starts accumulating in the vents causing hindrance in the air flow, consequences of which is laptop getting over heated.

2. Improper working of software – Laptop’s BIOS is the chief controlling factor which regulates the fan speed and its other functionality as well. BIOS which is not updated or is not supporting the OS (operating system) could cause a problem.

3. Designs – If the design of the laptop is not upto the mark and proper arrangements for the airflow is not made, possible overheat issues could arise.

4. Intensive Work – Too much load on the CPU causing the laptop to process faster, in-turn cause the laptop to get overheated.
Results – How laptop overheat can affect its performance
1. A major cause which results in reduced laptop life.
